Experience the Clever Hans Effect

You now embody Clever Hans himself!

As you stare out into the audience, you notice a sign being held up by someone in the crowd, which prompts you to begin tapping your hoof on the ground.

Written upon the sign is an equation that equals the amount of taps required, but you’re a horse and cannot read…

It’s your job to notice the reactions of the audience, and stop tapping your hoof at precisely the right moment.

What is the Clever Hans effect?

The mystery

In 1900 Berlin, Wilhelm von Osten’s horse, Hans, appears to solve complex math problems by tapping his hoof. Crowds are stunned. Scientists investigate. Hans seems brilliant, but as the audience watches the horse, the horse appears to be watching them.

The investigation

Psychologist Oskar Pfungst isolates the conditions of Hans’s performances and discovers the pattern: Hans succeeds only when he can see someone who knows the answer. Subtle, unconscious body cues, tension and release, guide his taps. The “Clever Hans effect” is named.

The human reveal

Pfungst tests his theory on people by “becoming the horse,” tapping out answers while volunteers think of numbers. He finds that even when humans try to suppress the cues, they can’t. The signals are involuntary. Von Osten continues touring Hans, unconvinced.

The modern echo

The lesson spreads beyond Berlin. Science increasingly relies on blinding to prevent unconscious influence. The same pattern appears in AI systems that latch onto hidden cues. The Clever Hans effect becomes a lasting reminder: expectation can shape outcomes without anyone realizing it.
